In So Many Words
Self-Initiated
A conceptual exploration of emotional dialogue. Or, a portrait of two people by means of idealized communication patterns.

This piece was made as a gift for my girlfriend. I wanted to dissect the content of certain (sometimes trying) conversations— how individually each of these types of phrases comprise an enclosed unit that one may employ as a device to communicate a certain idea—and for the words to be considered incrementally. Specifically, I was also wanting to explore the system by which each phrase becomes subdivided into its component words and the manner by which each word can take on a more deliberate wholeness that retains its own importance. Or perhaps, the relationship each word occupies in a larger referential context to the surrounding words, and to the other phrases. Sometimes the space around words (literally and metaphorically) is just as important as the words themselves. (Or it's not about what you say, but how you say it, or what else is said along with it, and so on.)

The dramatic spacing of these word-constructions and the measured pace of reading which they encourage make for a more focused act whereby the viewer is compelled to reflect more on the transmission of genuine meaning as opposed to the faculty of personal memory that supplies rote signficance to terms such as "I love you" and its signification. I wanted to reinforce the intentionality of making ammends, as opposed to mere hollow statements; to imbue the words with the honesty and gravity they propose.
